Nehru Trophy Boat Race

August 10

The Nehru Trophy Boat Race, named after Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, is one of Kerala’s most thrilling and prestigious snake boat races, held annually on the second Saturday of August at Punnamada Lake, near Alappuzha. This fiercely competitive race features the iconic chundan vallams (snake boats) slicing through the waters, propelled by the synchronized rowing of hundreds of oarsmen. On race day, the otherwise tranquil lakefront transforms into a vibrant spectacle, drawing nearly two lakh spectators, including international tourists. The electrifying atmosphere, rhythmic vanchipattu (boat songs), and the breathtaking final sprint make this event an unforgettable experience.
