Mannarasala Ayilyam
November 12

Mannarasala Ayilyam is the grand annual festival of the Mannarasala Sree Nagaraja Temple, a revered pilgrimage site dedicated to serpent worship. Located in Haripad, Alappuzha district, the temple is unique as it is managed by a Brahmin priestess. The festival, celebrated on the Ayilyam asterism of the Malayalam month of Thulam (October-November), draws thousands of devotees seeking the blessings of Nagaraja, the serpent god.
A key ritual of the festival is the procession of serpent idols from the temple to the illam (ancestral home) that oversees the temple’s affairs. The priestess carries the idol of Nagaraja, leading the sacred procession, followed by special prayers and offerings. The festival is deeply significant for devotees praying for fertility, protection from serpent-related afflictions, and family well-being.
