Chettikulangara Bharani

February 25

Chettikulangara Bharani, also known as Kumbha Bharani, is a grand festival celebrated at Chettikulangara Devi Temple in Alappuzha district. The festival takes place on the day of the Bharani Nakshatra in the Malayalam month of Kumbham (February–March). The key highlights of the festival are Kuthiyottam, a ritualistic offering where young boys undergo rigorous fasting and training before performing a symbolic martial dance, and Kettukazhcha, an awe-inspiring procession featuring massive, vibrantly decorated temple structures resembling chariots, horses, and effigies. The festival’s cultural and historical significance has earned it a place under UNESCO’s consideration for Intangible Cultural Heritage status, further highlighting its uniqueness and importance in Kerala’s rich traditions.
