Attukal Ponkala

January 25, 2026

Ponkala is the most significant festival of the Attukal Bhagavathy Temple, drawing thousands of devotees, especially women, from across Kerala. This unique ritual, an exclusive offering to the Goddess, involves devotees preparing Ponkala—a special rice offering—on makeshift hearths in earthen pots. The ten-day-long celebrations begin in the Malayalam month of Makaram-Kumbham (February–March) on the Karthika star, with various religious ceremonies and cultural programs. The festival’s highlight is the grand Ponkala Mahotsavam, where the streets surrounding the temple transform into a sea of devotion as women cook and offer their prayers in unison, creating an awe-inspiring spectacle of faith and tradition.
